in defense of
harriet shelley

Harriet Shelley, the often forgot first wife of famed Romantic Era poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, is typically remembered by the way she died--and when her life is discussed, it's often from a place of misinformation. Inspired by an essay of the same name by Mark Twain, "In Defense of Harriet Shelley" aims to tell the true story of Percy Shelley's first wife--extolling her from hundreds of years of lies perpetuated by the Shelley estate. Our characters are three: Harriet, Percy, and six female presenting actors making up a chorus. The masked Greek Style chorus act as both commentators on the plot and other characters within Harriet and Percy’s universe, only speaking in direct quotations from primary source documents such as letters and articles.A feminist piece, built on compassion, poetry, and extensive research.
